It’s A Slippery Slope; Wear Running Shoes

Me Today
It’s the day after Halloween, and I’m feeling regretful about all the candy I stole from my kids’ plastic pumpkins last night. No doubt I ingested thousands of calories in refined sugar. That can’t be good for anyone. It’s Friday though, which means I got up super early and ran, so it’s all good! Lie. I actually had every intention of doing so, but my bed was extra comfortable, so I slept in instead. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. It’s very common to fall off the healthy bandwagon this time of year. Maybe we’re hardwired to pack on pounds when the weather gets nippy to insulate our usually slender limbs. Maybe there’s something in the autumn air that makes candy sound like a great idea and exercising sound downright laughable. Honestly, why should we work out and eat right when we’re so far away from bikini season anyway? Even the cool weather fashions are more forgiving and can easily hide the 5-10 pounds you’ll likely gain if you continue down this deliciously slippery slope.

Story time

Gather ’round while Mama Chelle tells you a little ditty. Once upon a time, there was a beautiful princess named…Chelle! She had not a care in the world. She was naturally slim and only worked out occasionally, for the fun of it. She could eat whatever she wanted, often boastfully finishing off entire bags of chocolate candies by herself. Chelle had a super power. She wasn’t even really a woman. Chelle was…in her 20’s. Then, one Summer day, Chelle was savagely ripped from her perfectly capable metabolism and thrust into a scary dungeon called “thirties.” In this time, 3 adorable little monsters had ravaged her body as well.

This story can be told by many women, the names and numbers changing only slightly. Because our metabolism does slow down a bit as we enter our 30’s, it’s important that we don’t allow ourselves to completely let go in the winter and expect it to be as simple as it always had been in the past to lose those extra pounds before swimsuit season. In the past, I’d always padded up a bit in the cooler months, only to crash diet the following Spring, a few short weeks before shopping for a new bikini. I’ve noticed in the last few years, it’s getting more and more difficult to do so. This winter, I’m not going to allow the extra fluff to warm my bones. I’ll just wear a thicker coat!

Get Back On That Horse, Girl!

As I mentioned, I might have slipped a bit and fallen off the wagon last night and this morning. I try not to be too hard on myself, because after all, I am a busy mama and all I can do is my best. Tonight, I plan on running on the treadmill for 30 minutes and doing some light muscle training as well. I’m not just exercising for bikini season anymore either. Remember those 3 little monsters I mentioned? Well, I kind of want to be around for them for as long as I can.
